Summary

G’day。 I’m Pet。 Heirling。 Biter of fae lords。 Trouble。

I have a lot of names these days—including my own, real name。 Unfortunately for me, someone else knows that name too; not to mention the names of my other heirling friends。 Now those heirling friends have disappeared, stolen by the current King Behind for a fight to the death where only one contender to the throne remains。

The rules say there’s no way in and only one way out of that fight, but I’ve always preferred to work outside the rules。 I just have to trust my friends to help each other stay alive long enough for me to get them out—without becoming a contender for the throne myself。

Because one thing is for sure: I am absolutely not planning on being the next King Behind。

This book definitely wins my award for "Book With Most Plot Twists" There's a whole lot of twisty nonsense and hidden meanings in words (and the narration-- don't trust the narration) that all reveal themselves towards the end, and you find yourself wondering at how the clues were there all throughout the series。 Perhaps it is not a "good" last book in the sense of it doesn't give closure like last books normally do, but it ends in a way that is incredibly fitting for the characters and the over This book definitely wins my award for "Book With Most Plot Twists" There's a whole lot of twisty nonsense and hidden meanings in words (and the narration-- don't trust the narration) that all reveal themselves towards the end, and you find yourself wondering at how the clues were there all throughout the series。 Perhaps it is not a "good" last book in the sense of it doesn't give closure like last books normally do, but it ends in a way that is incredibly fitting for the characters and the overall ✨vibes ✨of the story, so I can't really complain。 Overall, it's a great book。 Gory, lotsa violence, some off to the side character deaths if you're sensitive to that, and heavy enough that I personally wouldn't re read it super often, but great book nonetheless。 。。。more

I loved this book and I imagine anyone who read the rest of the series will love it too but it is definitely not the starting point。 Between Jobs is great, start there。 Thing I particularly liked about this book - the cost to the characters in the book。 I love the characters and when they hurt I hurt, I am far too emotionally invested, but helping others does cost and sometimes the price is high。 It made the ending more believable。 I also continue to love Athelas despite some of the terrible thi I loved this book and I imagine anyone who read the rest of the series will love it too but it is definitely not the starting point。 Between Jobs is great, start there。 Thing I particularly liked about this book - the cost to the characters in the book。 I love the characters and when they hurt I hurt, I am far too emotionally invested, but helping others does cost and sometimes the price is high。 It made the ending more believable。 I also continue to love Athelas despite some of the terrible things he has done。 。。。more

Ahhhh!!I knew this book was going to be good and it was even better than expected。 There was a lot of twists and turns。 I missed Zero but it didn't take away from how good it was。 Athelas is the best villain ever。 You know he's done despicable things but you still love him and not because he's the hot love interest because he isn't。 Pet is one of the best characters written and the romance between her and Jen Yeong is breathtakingly sweet。 This book was more than worth the read。 Ahhhh!!I knew this book was going to be good and it was even better than expected。 There was a lot of twists and turns。 I missed Zero but it didn't take away from how good it was。 Athelas is the best villain ever。 You know he's done despicable things but you still love him and not because he's the hot love interest because he isn't。 Pet is one of the best characters written and the romance between her and Jen Yeong is breathtakingly sweet。 This book was more than worth the read。 。。。more

The ending wasn't exactly what I expected 3。5⭐So, this was the final installment to "The City Between" book series, and it wasn't my favorite, but it did answer some questions。So, in the end, it was somewhat satisfying。There is a new king, but honestly, we all knew that was going to happen。 However, the person that eventually became the new king was a complete surprise for me。There are a lot of revelations in this book, mostly to do with Athelas, and those felt very unsatisfying to me。 In the en The ending wasn't exactly what I expected 3。5⭐So, this was the final installment to "The City Between" book series, and it wasn't my favorite, but it did answer some questions。So, in the end, it was somewhat satisfying。There is a new king, but honestly, we all knew that was going to happen。 However, the person that eventually became the new king was a complete surprise for me。There are a lot of revelations in this book, mostly to do with Athelas, and those felt very unsatisfying to me。 In the end, I think the whole thing with "the old man's" reasoning behind his serial killer tendencies and the complete lack of understanding that anyone had towards him and his horrible life as Lord Sero's magically bound slave was shocking。I mean, psychologically he had to have shattered more than once in his life (since childhood) being magically bound and shackled to the psychopath that was Lord Sero。 There is just no way he couldn't have。 Even his thoughts and memories were not safe from his captor。So, his lack of care for the murders he committed makes perfect sense。 There is no way that anybody could hold onto emotion like a normal person when subjected to all of the physical, mental and emotional trauma that he went through throughout his very long and painful life (Again, since childhood he was bound to that psycho!)I just found it baffling that even when people understood what he went through, nobody really took the time to understand the true impact of that on his emotions and thought patterns。 They just expected him to react like an un-traumatised person would react, and when he didn't they immediately assumed its because he's a psycho that just loves killing。I get people being heartbroken, upset and struggling to forgive him, but I really don't think there was enough emphasis or care as to why he did what he did。Pets revelation and what happens to her in the end was shocking to me also, but the very end was just meh。。。。I don't know, I really enjoyed this series, but this book dragged for me a lot。 I wasn't happy with some of what happened, and in the end I feel this book wasn't what I was hoping for, but it did tie things up in an alright way。I still love this series, but this book wasn't my favourite。 。。。more

What a conclusion! This has to be one of my favorite series that I randomly came across over the internet。 It’s fun and whimsical and real。 It sunk its magic deep in my head and there hasn’t been a time when I haven’t looked forward to the next book。 These were some of my favorite characters and I’m so glad I was able to go on this crazy adventure with them。 Goodbye Pet, Zero, and JinYeong。 It was nice meeting you。

I have really mixed feelings on this book。 Don't get me wrong, it was good! But it was not how I would have wanted the series to end! There were also a few things that felt unresolved and unexplained。 I have a feeling the author meant to leave it that way, I think she wanted it to feel more a real world situation where things don't work out perfectly。 And while I understand that, as a reader it just left me feeling sad for the characters and a bit frustrated at the situation。 That said, I have l I have really mixed feelings on this book。 Don't get me wrong, it was good! good ending…Or maybe just a pause? Some indications of more to come…i have followed this series since its inception, and wondered how ms gingell would tie it up…some major plot developments in earlier texts shocked me, and i am glad to say that my fears were allayed in this one…well written, interesting world(s), attractive characters, fun elements from myths and sagas…well played…good show…

a fabulous finale to the City Between series!Pet is in a pickle。 Some of her friends and Zero have been called to a Challenge arena, where they’re stuck until either the king or one of the heirlings wins。 she still has a few tricks up her sleeve, though, on how to out trick the trickster。I was pleasantly surprised by what a great ending this book is to the series。 (If you have read them all yet, go back and read the other 9 first 😉)。 A lot of unanswered questions are answered , and all of our fa a fabulous finale to the City Between series!Pet is in a pickle。 Some of her friends and Zero have been called to a Challenge arena, where they’re stuck until either the king or one of the heirlings wins。 she still has a few tricks up her sleeve, though, on how to out trick the trickster。I was pleasantly surprised by what a great ending this book is to the series。 (If you have read them all yet, go back and read the other 9 first 😉)。 A lot of unanswered questions are answered , and all of our favorite characters are there。 There’s lots of fighting, heartfelt emotion, and interesting surprises , so get started today 。。。more

I love beginnings and really dislike endings as a general rule but this was one of the most the most perfectly imperfect endings that I have ever read。 It was sweet, sad, hopeful, and a little surprising。 I'm not going to include any spoilers because this is book 10 and the journey is just as worthwhile as the destination for The City Between series。 I love beginnings and really dislike endings as a general rule but this was one of the most the most perfectly imperfect endings that I have ever read。 It was sweet, sad, hopeful, and a little surprising。 I'm not going to include any spoilers because this is book 10 and the journey is just as worthwhile as the destination for The City Between series。 。。。more

My heart just exploded! What a beautiful book and series。 I can’t tell you how good it was enough! There is so much I would say but I won’t spoil it。 But… i just want to talk to people about this book/series! So good and so many thoughts。 Mercy, love, family, redemption, forgiveness, strength, laughter… oh so much bundled in this!

a good conclusion but bk 9 & 10 should have been 1 bookI thought it was a good conclusion to a solid series but I think it would have been more impactful had books 9 & 10 been combined。 It just didn’t feel like a separate book。 Otherwise really liked it。

Almost perfect ending。Except I don't want Ruth's story to end。 Love the hints as to their lives after killing the king。 Would adore a further-adventures 2nd trilogy。 Kinda want to see how Ruth would do as a vampire, tho I doubt that's where it would head。 But if you're counting up votes, that's mine。 Almost perfect ending。Except I don't want Ruth's story to end。 Love the hints as to their lives after killing the king。 Would adore a further-adventures 2nd trilogy。 Kinda want to see how Ruth would do as a vampire, tho I doubt that's where it would head。 But if you're counting up votes, that's mine。 。。。more

lovely conclusion This was a lovely conclusion to the series。 I loved seeing how Pet and the gang wrapped everything up。 And the creativity of the Pet was on full display。 Because pets just keep popping up where you don’t expect them, right?

(Non-spoiler review for first half only)Oh my goodness, thank you for such an amazing book, Miss Gingell! 'Surprise' actually doesn't even seem to cover it。 There were the happy spots; like Abigail&Co。 being alive and Zero, Morgana, Sarah, Ralph, JinYeong, Pet (Ruth? I don't know what to call her at this point), Athelas and most of the others coming out safe, and Athelas being somewhat good, and Palomena and Zero being a thing。 And then of course, the OTHER parts。 Chelsea, Chantelle, and Kyle。 Pretty much everything about Athelas; Healing, and consequently, caring about Ruth/Pet, sparing Abigail&Co, and saving the final crew。 Pet being THE HARBINGER! Les becoming king。 Pet LOSING her flamin' ARM。 Yes, so SO much here, and I'm glad for all of it。 Well, maybe not GLAD for some of the things, but y'all get the idea。 Anyways, some of my favorite quotes:"The now where I'm being squashed in the arms of a terrified vampire who has gone protective-mode and is snarling over my shoulder at anyone who gets too close because about half the people who were in the house have now disappeared。" " 'Daniel, don't let Athelas bait you。 He's really good at telling lies when he tells the truth。' 。。。 Athelas murmured, 'What a delightful compliment!' ""Worry is not currency, lady," said Les。 "I accept food and drink only。""Ah," he said。 "That。 I wish to date you so that I can persuade you to marry me。" I gazed at him for a while before I said, "You've got kangaroos in the top paddock。""Oi。 Thomas lynne, King of Behind。 I'm calling you, so get your backside over here。""His golden-brown brows went up; surprised retriever, I call that look。""I know," I said。 "I'm yours。 But I'm the flamin' queen, and you better not forget it。""Days and nights," he said。 "Years and months, they don't sit still for me。 I remember the dancing and the drink, but I was hiding in the glitter and trying to avoid the blood。" "Yep, sounds like the twenties,"(Thank you for reading this incredibly long "review! Good heavens。What an explosive, utterly riveting finale, full of mercy and revelations and forgiveness。 Content: violence and gore, a bit of kissing, magic。 Two characters of the opposite gender fall asleep next to each other a couple times。 The lyncanthropes shift back into human form without clothes。

This is it, y'all。 This is it。Well, not if you count the the two upcoming spinoff series, but this finale was something else, lemme tell you。Pet's growth from books one has truly been a pleasure to to watch and to see her honestly and truly grown up in this was possibly my favorite part。 Something that really hit home in a Certain Scene that I will not detail here。I could talk about the themes of justice, mercy, and forgiveness。 I could talk about how the meaning of sacrifice is discussed and ho This is it, y'all。 This is it。Well, not if you count the the two upcoming spinoff series, but this finale was something else, lemme tell you。Pet's growth from books one has truly been a pleasure to to watch and to see her honestly and truly grown up in this was possibly my favorite part。 Something that really hit home in a Certain Scene that I will not detail here。I could talk about the themes of justice, mercy, and forgiveness。 I could talk about how the meaning of sacrifice is discussed and how regret is something very real。 But instead, I'll just say that this book was not exactly what I was expecting for the finale, but it's something that I adore nonetheless。 Not all loose ends are tied up。 Not all plotlines are neatly wrapped up in a bow, but it leaves much to the imagination and much to look forward to。To sum it up, Thank you WR Gingell! The luxury of being able to read a long-awaited final-in-series in a single sitting is offset by the knowledge that I sat and devoured this story with expectations that all the unanswered questions would be answered。 I came to this book with a few theories, and I was sometimes right, but there were so many twisty surprises to keep me glued to the page。Well done, W。R。 Gingell。 This final book in the City Between series delivered everything that I expected and more。
